Dr. Andrew Howard, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at Harvard University and medical school at Queen's University. Following training in psychiatry at the University of British Columbia between 1998 and 2003, he entered a two-year clinical fellowship in Neuropsychiatry/Behavioural Neurology, a subspecialty of psychiatry/neurology dealing with the assessment and management of complex cases involving brain injury or illness and brain dysfunction resulting in observable changes in patients' behaviour, emotional control, physical and cognitive abilities. In 2008, he was certified by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties (a subsidiary of the American Neurological Association) in the subspecialty of Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry.
Recruited at UBC, he has served as an inpatient and outpatient clinician and supervisor to trainees, diagnosing and treating patients with a variety of neurological conditions and/or somatoform and conversion disorders.
He has developed research expertise in deep brain stimulation for movement disorders and depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and clinical expertise in the assessment and management of severe somatization, movement disorders such as dystonia, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington disease, and psychiatric conditions resulting from neurological disease or brain injury. He serves as the education coordinator of the British Columbia Neuropsychiatry Program, overseeing training of clinical neuropsychiatry fellows, as well as psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and neurology residents, and elective medical students, in clinical neuropsychiatry.
His practice is devoted to the rehabilitation and optimal care of patients with neurological diseases and psychiatric symptoms, as well as those patients with persistent and severe unexplained physical and psychiatric symptoms.
