Dr. Emmanuel Illical
SPECIALIZATION: HIP & KNEE

Dr. Emmanuel Michael Illical is a dual board certified (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of
Canada and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery) and dual fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon,
specializing in adult reconstruction (hip and knee arthroplasty) and orthopaedic trauma.
Dr. Illical completed his medical school training at the University of Alberta in 2006 and orthopaedic
residency at the University of Calgary in 2011. He subsequently completed his Adult Reconstruction
Fellowship at the University of Ottawa from 2011-2012 under the direction of Dr. Paul Beaule, one of
the pioneers of direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in Canada. From 2012-2013, Dr. Illical
completed his orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he
gained a wealth of experience at one of the busiest level 1 trauma centers in the United States.
After locuming in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario from 2013-2015, Dr. Illical moved to
Brooklyn, New York, where he served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at the State University of
New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center. SUNY Downstate is
the largest academic center in Brooklyn and Kings County Hospital Center is one of the first level 1
trauma centers established in the United States. He served as the primary orthopaedic trauma surgeon
for all pelvis and acetabular fractures and the most complex fractures and injuries (polytrauma patients,
peri-articular fractures, and peri-prosthetic fractures).
After he met his wife, Dr. Illical moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2018, and served as the
Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Einstein Healthcare Network. He again served in a similar role as
the primary orthopaedic trauma surgeon for all complex orthopaedic trauma injuries and was the
primary adult reconstruction surgeon for difficult primary total joint arthroplasty and revision total joint
arthroplasty.
In 2020, Dr. Illical moved back to Canada. He currently has a public practice in Calgary, Alberta, at
South Health Campus Hospital. He has a high-volume hip and knee arthroplasty practice in addition to
his orthopaedic trauma practice. Within his total joint arthroplasty practice, Dr. Illical has a special
interest in direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty, cementless total knee arthroplasty, complex
primary joint arthroplasty, revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic fractures.
Dr. Illical prides himself in being academically active. He is involved in both residency and fellowship
training within the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary. He also serves as the
Quality Improvement and Safety Lead for the Section. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma
Association (OTA), Canadian Orthopaedic Trauma Society (COTS), AOTrauma North America,
Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS), American Association of Orthopaedic Association (AAOS), and
the Canadian Orthopaedic Society.
