Dr. Brian Day

Dr. Brian Day was born in Liverpool and graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester, England in 1970. He obtained post-graduate qualifications in Britain, in both internal medicine and general surgery, and in 1978 he completed his training at the University of British Columbia. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He holds a M.Sc. degree from the University of British Columbia and in 1979 received the Canadian Orthopaedic Association’s Edouard Samson Award, for outstanding orthopaedic research in Canada. Following a Fellowship in traumatology, in Basel (Switzerland), Oxford (England), and Los Angeles, he began practice at the Vancouver General Hospital, initially in trauma, but later developing an interest and expertise in orthopaedic sports medicine and arthroscopy.
Dr. Day is the president elect of the Canadian Medical Association. He is the past President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the world’s leading academic society in the field of sports injuries and medicine – and is only the second Canadian to have assumed that position. He is past Chairman of its Research Committee. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Sports Traumatology. He has chaired five International Seminars on arthroscopic surgery, and is a pioneer in the introduction and teaching of arthroscopic surgical techniques in Canada. He is a former Secretary – Treasurer and Vice-President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation),
a past Director of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and has served on the Executive of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society. For three years he was Chairman of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada Test Committee in Orthopaedics. He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and is on the editorial board of several other publications.
Dr. Day is Associate Professor (part-time) in orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. He has been invited as a visiting professor and lecturer at many universities and learned societies in the United States and around the world, including McGill, Manitoba, Ottawa, Bowman Gray (N. Carolina), Yale, Cambridge (England), Taipei, Manila, Madrid, Santiago, Mexico, Athens, Rome and Sydney. Dr. Day has published over 50 scientific articles and book chapters. Dr. Day is the President and CEO of Cambie Surgeries Corporation, a private company that developed the first private health care facility of its type in Canada, described in the media as “Canada’s finest medical facility”. In 2001 the Vancouver Medical Association honoured him as the 80th Osler lecturer. In addition to lecturing world wide in his area of specialization, he often speaks on topics relating to the business of medicine and has appeared often in the local and national media on issues of health economics, health policy and the role of the private sector. Canada’s most widely read news magazine, MacLean’s Magazine, recently described him as “a man whose time is now” and named him “one of the top 50 Canadians to watch in 2003″.
